How it started...

Abbie

Abbie's Army is arguably the most active family-led charity in the UK, dedicated to funding research specifically into Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), the most lethal childhood brain tumour. Our story began with our precious daughter, Abbie who passed away age 6 following a short fight with DIPG. Her spirit lives on through our mission.

Our dedicated Trustees, Abbie's parents, family members and friends give up their time voluntarily to administer and organise charity events, and provide the governance needed to ensure the fulfilment of our aims and objectives for 'public benefit'.

No one in connection with Abbie's Army receives payment or benefits of any kind.

Premises and overhead costs are met entirely by an existing sponsor. The resultant being that almost every penny donated goes towards where it is most needed - the funding of vital DIPG research!

Our Scientific Advisory Panel

Abbie's Army is committed to funding the most promising research for DIPG. To achieve this, we rely on the help and expertise of a distinguished international panel of scientific advisors.

Our panel comprises leading experts in childhood DIPG brain cancer research and treatment technologies. They bring a wealth of experience and knowledge from various scientific disciplines. They help us to identify research priorities and assess projects for funding.

We also have the guidance of world renown DIPG clinicians, including those within the UK’s leading NHS paediatric hospitals such as, Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) the largest paediatric cancer care centre in Europe and UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health.

Ensuring Impartiality

We maintain the highest ethical standards in our grant review process. Advisors will not be current beneficiaries of Abbie's Army, guaranteeing complete objectivity in their evaluations. We carefully select advisories based on the specific grant application's focus and ensure involvement is proportionate to funding amounts requested.

Our Army of Volunteers & Fundraisers

Abbie's Army would not exist without the unwavering dedication of our incredible volunteers and fundraisers.

Their tireless efforts, from organising fundraising events and manning stalls to cheering us on at sporting events and providing essential administrative support, are the backbone of our charity. Thanks to their passion and commitment, we can continue our fight against DIPG.

It's thanks to them, and their hard work that we can continue to fund vital research to find better treatments and ultimately a cure.
